Passports to enhance educational outcomes  24 May 2012
Photo of a student and staff holding school passportsA new trial scheme has been launched to encourage school attendance and good behaviour in Central Australian schools. The School Passport system involves families earning points for participation in school based activities. They are redeemable for resources like uniforms, camps and excursions. Sadadeen Primary School, Alice Springs, is the first to trial the passports. The scheme is an initiative under the Alice Springs Youth Action Plan and is aligned to the DET Strategic Plan through All Stages of Learning.

2012 budgetThe NT Government announced a record $950 million investment in education and training initiatives in its 2012 budget. Minister for Education and Training Chris Burns says the investment in schools, teachers, specialist education programs, re-engagement and improved training outcomes is an investment in a smart Territory.

Smart Schools Awards launched by the Minister for Education and Training, Dr Chris Burns MLA, at Millner Primary SchoolThe Smart Schools Awards celebrate excellence in education, showcasing the quality and achievements of government schools across the Territory. The awards were launched at Millner Primary School – they won $20,000 last year for “Innovation in Indigenous Education” and bought iPads for transition students. There are numerous categories that schools can apply for. The awards are open to all NT Government schools. The winning schools will be announced on 20 October at the Darwin Convention Centre.
