About us

The Minister for Education and Training is the Hon Paul Henderson MLA. Please visit the Northern Territory Government website for information about the Chief Minister and Cabinet.

Through quality strategies, programs, people, partnerships and systems, the Department of Education and Training will grow educated, skilled and smart Territorians.

We provide quality early childhood services and education for all young Territorians, with a focus on meeting the needs of Indigenous students, leading to jobs, training and further education. In the training business area, we work to increase access to training pathways for Territorians to build or expand their skills so they can contribute to and benefit from the Territory's development.

  • We employ about 4500 people across the Northern Territory, including about 3800 teachers, principals and other school staff.
  • Every school day, we provide public education to about 30,000 students in 150 schools.
  • The Indigenous school-aged population in the Northern Territory of 39.5 per cent is significantly higher than the national average of 4.1 per cent.
  • About 31 per cent of our school workforce is based in remote locations.
