The Age of Entry

Policy

The Age of Entry Policy was drafted on the advice and evidence from parents, teaching staff and early childhood experts.  The policy aligns the department with the national initiatives on Universal Access and the Early Learning Framework.  The policy will be made public after it has been endorsed and approved by the Executive Board..

Background to the Age of Entry Trial

The department’s review of the Age of Entry Policy was to ensure that schools in the NT were on track moving to a nationally consistent single intake policy.

The review of the Age of Entry Policy for Preschool and Transition enrolment began in 2003. Consultation was conducted across the NT and the department undertook extensive research on quality approaches for the Early Years.

The Age of Entry Policy Trial provided a streamlined enrolment structure with:

  • clear guidelines about when children access pre-compulsory programs (Preschool and Transition)
  • a single intake into Transition at the start of the year (for all children turning five on or by 30 June)
  • consistency and equity for access to two years pre-compulsory early learning programs.

In 2008, the final year of the trial, 92 NT Government primary schools implemented the policy. Feedback from school staff, parents and the community was collected each year.

Supporting evidence

It is noteworthy that the single intake for Transition has been beneficial for children in developing relationships and group cohesion, as well as academic development. Evidence-based practice strongly supports access to two years of quality pre-compulsory programs to optimise educational outcomes and improve life-learning outcomes. The flexible Preschool enrolments have also received positive feedback from parents and community groups.
