Northern Territory Indigenous Education Council
The Northern Territory Indigenous Education Council (NTIEC) is an Indigenous representative advisory body appointed by the Minister for Education and Training to provide advice and make recommendations to the NT Government and Australian Government Ministers on education for Indigenous students in the Northern Territory.
The 10-member Council provides a vital link between local schools, communities and governments to ensure Indigenous students get the best possible outcomes.
A key role of the council is to consult directly with Indigenous people across the Territory on a regular basis and reflect Indigenous people’s views, aspirations and concerns on education services and outcomes for Indigenous students.
The council will place a particular focus on improving attendance, literacy and numeracy and transition pathways from school to work or further study.
Members have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in Indigenous education and possess substantial experience and skills in other related areas such as health, housing and business.
The Council ratified its Strategic Plan for 2008-09 (pdf 207Kb), which sets out the Council’s vision and priorities, lists current members and specifies how they plan to achieve their goals.
The first round of community consultations took place on the Tiwi Islands in April. The second round is due to take place on Groote Eylandt in June, followed by meetings in the Barkly and in Central Australia later in the year.
