Boys’ Education NT
Boys’ Education NT is the Northern Territory Department of Education and Training's response to national initiatives focusing on boys’ education.
Boys’ Education Lighthouse Schools Programme
From 2003-2005 the Australian Government committed $3.5 million to the Boys’ Education Lighthouse Schools (BELS) Programme. The aim of the BELS Programme was to identify and showcase successful practices in the education of boys.
Success for Boys
In 2006 and 2007 a further $19.4 million will be committed to improve the learning outcomes of boys across Australia through the Success for Boys initiative.
Success for Boys is a professional learning program for educators. The aim of the learning modules is to improve the knowledge, skills and understandings of teachers in relation to the education of boys. The Success for Boys program provides teachers with strategies to adopt evidence-based teaching practices that improve boys’ motivation, engagement and learning outcomes.
Stage 1 of Success for Boys occurred in 2005. Forty schools across Australia trialed the Success for Boys Professional Learning Programme developed by James Cook University, Queensland, in partnership with Curriculum Corporation. Three Northern Territory schools participated in the trial: Kormilda College, Driver Primary School and Wagaman Primary School.
Eight hundred and one (801) schools across Australia have been selected to receive funding to implement Success for Boys in 2006. There are twenty Northern Territory schools among this 801.
The selection process for 2007 will commence in July 2006. Schools are urged to visit the Success for Boys website at www.successforboys.edu.au to find out about application deadlines.
