Home education in NT
The Department of Education and Training recognises that the terms home education and home schooling are often used interchangeably.
We have chosen to use the term home education in preference to home schooling in recognition of the point of view that home schooling implies a more structured activity and curriculum position akin to school, whereas home education occurs when parents choose to educate their children from a home base.
This choice is based on a principle that home education best meets the needs of the child and is not determined by the inability of the child to attend school because of geography or disability.
Further information about home education is available in the information booklet for parents applying for home education (pdf 68Kb). This booklet contains:
- Foreword to parents
- Guidelines for registration of home education
- Conditions for home education
- Home Education Portfolio Guidelines
- Frequently asked questions
- Home education process
If you wish to participate in the home education program you must complete and return an application for education in other than a government or non-government school (word 92Kb). Interim approval is granted provided the application is completed fully. The interim approval remains in place during the approval process. Children should not be removed from school until interim approval has been received in writing.
