About

Established in 2009, Battle of the School Bands is a band competition for Northern Territory schools, which sees the winners play alongside international acts at the annual BASSINTHEGRASS music festival in Darwin.

The Battle of the School Bands is open to middle and senior students (Years 7-12) enrolled in government and non-government schools. Students can enter as a part of a band, duo or soloist.

Prizes this year include recording time, musical gear and vouchers from Allans Music / Billy Hydes stores

One expanded Territory wide competition

Originally Battle of the School Bands was staged as two separate competitions, Central Australia and Top End. However, after feedback from entrants it was decided that in 2011 there would be one Territory-wide competition.

After the success of the 2011 competition, this year’s competitions will follow the same format, where the winners will be invited to play at BASSINTHEGRASS in Darwin.

To enter the competition you must complete an expression of interest form and be eligible to perform at one of the school heats held in late March / early April. Here you will learn about stagecraft and musicianship from members of a former Bass in the Grass act, local band Terracotta Pigeons and local singer/songwriter Leah Flanagan. You and your band or duo will perform two original songs at your allocated school heat for the opportunity to earn a place in the final, held on Friday 13 April at The Big Gig - National Youth week Concert. If you are from a remote school and cannot attend a school heat you can send a DVD of your performance. See the How to enter page for more details.
