National Literacy and Numeracy Week
National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) was held between 31 August to 6 September 2009 as part of Education Week in the Northern Territory.
The Department of Employment, Education and Workplace Relations provided a range of activities for schools around Australia to become involved in during National Literacy and Numeracy Week.
National activities
- National Reading Day - A mass participation literacy event for primary and secondary school students. This national activity (pdf 67 kb) encourages schools to select their own texts and to become involved in activities where they share their reading.
- Reach for the Stars - A numeracy activity that has been part of National Literacy and Numeracy Week since 2003. The activity provides an opportunity for students across Australia to get involved in a single event with a numeracy focus. Targeting pre-school to junior secondary school students (Kindergarten to Year 9), Reach for the Stars is developed and managed by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT), with funding from the Australian Government.
NT events and activities
Schools could participate in national NLNW events and visit their local library.
- NT libraries displays and activities - Darwin, Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Nhulunbuy and Katherine libraries will host displays of local student work and/or offer literacy or numeracy activities. Schools are encouraged to visit your local library during Literacy and Numeracy week.
- Professional associations events and activities - NT professional associations will receive NLNW grants to promote and share literacy and numeracy teaching and learning. Presentation of professional association awards to outstanding teachers will also occur during NLNW.
Wikispace: National Literacy and Numeracy Week
Schools and professional associations were encouraged to enter their planned activities for celebrating this year's National Literacy and Numeracy Week (NLNW) onto the Northern Territory NLNW wikispace. This web space allows you to find out what other Territory schools and communities have planned for this week in September, and share what you have organised to celebrate the successes in literacy and numeracy.
