Try'a Trade
Try'a Trade is a Worldskills Australia initiative. Try'a Trade encourages Year 9 students to consider a career in the trades and take on Vocational Education and Training (VET) subjects at school. The event provides students with an opportunity to 'have a go' at various skill and trade occupations. The activities are entertaining, informative and offer interested people access to some of the basic skills involved in a range of trades. The Try'a Trade events seek to:
- motivate students and others through a hands on experience
- share information about future career choices
- encourage participants to appreciate that skill education and training offer choices for the future.
Try'a Trade allows students to meet and talk with trade professionals, apprentices, VET teachers/trainers/lecturers and local industry people.
The Try'a Trade organising committee is a partnership between the NT Department of Education and Training, Group Training NT and Charles Darwin University.

Become a skilled coach
Try'a Trade is a unique concept which brings local businesses, schools and young people together. National skills shortage means future tradespeople will be in demand for years to come. This initiative aims to train and keep skilled young people in
the Northern Territory.
Try'a Trade is a hands-on event allowing Territory students to have direct interaction with experienced tradespeople, apprentices and VET trainers. The key target audience is students in Year 9 with the objective of getting them to enrol in a Vocational Education and Training (VET) program and advise them regarding their school subject choices.
Try'a Trade allows students to try various skill and trade areas. The event has up to 15 separate trades or occupations. Interested students in groups of up to 12 will spend 25 minutes in each area.
Try'a Trade is not possible without the support of local volunteers, businesses and industries across the Territory. By investing in the promotion of trades, not only are you demonstrating your commitment to easing the skills shortage, you may find a future apprentice!
As a Skills Coach you will have the opportunity to talk to Territory students directly about what you do, how they can get into your industry and the benefits of being employed in your trade area. The projects might include anything from changing a leaking tap (plumbing), making a garden chair (carpentry), or potting and budding plants (horticulture).
To register your interest in being an industry skills coach and support Trya Trade, please contact on of the Try'a Trade coordinators listed below.
