More Indigenous Teacher
The More Indigenous Teachers initiative aims to address some of the challenges of recruiting and retaining quality teaching staff for remote communities by assisting Indigenous Territorians to become teachers in the Territory and encouraging Indigenous students to consider a career in teaching.
There are three specific financial study support programs (commonly referred to as More Indigenous Teachers Programs) established in the Department of Education and Training to increase the number of Indigenous teachers:
- Cadetships
- Scholarships
- Fellowships
These programs are co-funded by the Commonwealth Department of Employment, Education and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), with the cadetship specifically administered in conjunction with the Indigenous Cadetship Support (ICS) formally known as National Indigenous Cadetship Project (NICP). Applicants will need to be familiar with terms and conditions of each program.

Note: If your Northern Territory residential address is a town, place, community or locality outside of Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs (where access to health, education, social, financial, emergency, communication and professional support services are limited) and you have applied for a Cadetship and / or Scholarship, you will also be considered for the Wesley Lanhupuy Remote Indigenous Cadetship and / or Remote Indigenous Scholarship:
- The Wesley Lanhupuy Remote Indigenous Teacher Cadetship was launched in 2007 to provide opportunities for Indigenous people from remote locations to access the Indigenous Cadetship Program. This initiative honours the late Wesley Lanhupuy MLA as a leader and as a role model in his community.
- The Remote Indigenous Scholarship is to provide opportunities for Indigenous people from remote locations to access the Indigenous Scholarship Program.
2010 SHIPS applications are now open.
