Medal ceremony for WorldSkills champions
Media release, 30 October 2009
Department of Education and Training Chief Executive Gary Barnes congratulated the winners of the 2009 WorldSkills NT regional competitions at an awards function in Palmerston last night.
Almost 100 skilled young Territorians from nine disciplines competed in both open and Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) categories this year.
"It is important to share and celebrate the excellence and commitment of our VET in Schools students and skilled young people, and the people who support them," Mr Barnes said.
Mr Barnes said WorldSkills competitions encouraged participants to strive for excellence.
"This competition gives young people an opportunity to pit their skills and abilities against those of their peers.
"Winners and placegetters automatically position themselves as high performers. Recognition as a skills champion can potentially open doors and fast-track careers."
The Department of Education and Training works closely with industry to foster interest in addressing skills shortages, and WorldSkills competitions help raise the profile of and celebrate trades and other occupations.
WorldSkills competition projects are set nationally and are marked by a panel of judges to ensure they meet the criteria set by WorldSkills Australia.
Mr Barnes said the competition also presents a great opportunity for Territorians to demonstrate that our levels of training, skills and expertise are comparable with the rest of Australia.
Last night's winners have earned the right to represent the Territory at the national competition in Brisbane next year.
