Assessment of student competencies
The Assessment of Student Competencies (ASC) is a diagnostic assessment developed to measure those outcomes considered critical for success in the formal academic years of schooling (from Year 1 onwards). The competencies identified are the minimum requirement for a child entering compulsory schooling in order for them to make progress in their learning. The assessment is administered on current Transition students and students in their final term of preschool (Term 4).
ASC Administration Guide and Teacher Handbook - Programming Resource 2010 publications have been provided to all primary and comprehensive schools.
Screening tool and resources
- Administration guide (pdf 676 kb) provides information on how to use the database, frequently asked questions, summary of reports available and a recommended implementation process for teachers to follow.
- Teacher handbook - programming resource (pdf 728 kb) provides comprehensive information about student development as assessed by the indicators of the Screening tool. This handbook is to be used as a reference when using the Screening tool and as a resource for developing teaching and assessment plans. The activities in the handbook suggest ways that students can practise and be observed competent against each of the indicators on the ASC.
- E-copy Class summary recording sheets (excel 78 kb) are designed to assist electronic recording of students achievement prior to entering information on the database.
- Assessment of Student Competencies database has been developed to streamline the data gathering and reporting processes of the ASC. Teachers are required to record the results of their assessments in this database. Refer to the administration guide for more details.
