NT Indigenous Education Council
The Northern Territory Indigenous Education Council (NTIEC) is an Indigenous representative advisory body appointed by the Minister for Education and Training to provide advice and make recommendations to the NT Government and Australian Government Ministers on education for Indigenous students in the Northern Territory.
The Council provides a vital link between parents, local schools, communities and governments to ensure Indigenous students get the best possible outcomes. The council consists of representatives from Alice Springs, Darwin, Daly River, Katherine, Lajamanu, Maningrida, Milingimbi, Numbulwar, Tiwi Islands and Yirrkala regions.
A key role of the council is to consult directly with Indigenous people across the Territory on a regular basis and reflect Indigenous people's views, aspirations and concerns on education services and outcomes for Indigenous students.
The council will place a particular focus on improving attendance, literacy and numeracy and transition pathways from school to work or further study.
Members have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in Indigenous education and possess substantial experience and skills in other related areas such as health, housing and business.
The NTIEC Strategic Plan (pdf 143 kb) was amended in 2011 to be aligned with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Action Plan. The NTIEC Strategic Plan is also aligned with the Department of Education and Training’s Strategic Plan.
This allows the Council to focus on the 6 COAG priorities.
- Attendance
- Engagement and connections
- Literacy and Numeracy
- Readiness for school
- Pathways to real post school options
- Leadership, quality teaching and workforce development

Community consultations
In 2011, due to unforeseeable circumstances, community consultations didn’t take place until mid-September.
The Council’s first visit was to Ti Tree where the school was celebrating “Mobfest” with many visitors at the school. The Council was given a tour of the school by the principal before assembling on the grass outside the classrooms with parents and community members for consultations.
The Council’s second community visit was to Ampilatwatja, who unfortunately had “Sorry Business” on the day, however, a few parents and community members and the school principal met with the Council members for discussions.
The third community visit was to Utopia at the new Arlparra High School, which is very new with excellent facilities. Council members met with assistant teachers and community members for their updates on education matters of the community.
We have travelled to many places and met many people, the NTIEC is aware that there will be many more places to visit and people to listen to in regards to their educational issues.
We are very much aware that the Northern Territory is a huge place and cannot be covered in a short time. However, in the future will be trying to visit as many communities as possible in an effort to collect issues that are affecting our children, our youth and not to forget our elders when it comes to education.
