Professional learning modules

The Professional Learning modules have been developed as a support for schools seeking to implement various aspects of the Safe Schools NT Framework.

They can be delivered as a series of Power Point presentations and should be used in conjunction with accompanying teaching notes and additional resources.

It is recommended that presenters review each module and apply the material to their own context, all or parts of the modules could be used depending on the need.

The following notes can help you prepare to deliver a presentation:

  • Go through the power point and teaching notes, do they make sense to you?
  • What extra resources will you need to make an effective presentation?
  • Determine what length of time you will need for the presentation. This will depend on the type of delivery and the level of participation you require. If you are delivering a workshop have an idea of how long each activity will take.
  • At the end of your presentation seek feedback and review your presentation and make adjustments where needed.

Modules

  1. Safe Schools NT: A part of the National Safe Schools Framework
This introductory module gives a brief outline of the history behind the establishment of the Safe Schools NT Framework and its connection to the National Safe Schools Framework.

    Module 1 (ppt 577 Kb)
    Teacher notes (pdf 97 Kb)

  2. Developing a Whole School Wellbeing and Behaviour Policy
Following on from the release of the Safe Schools NT Code of Behaviour, all schools are required to develop their own Wellbeing and Behaviour Policy by the end of 2007. This module is aimed at supporting school principals, senior staff, teachers and school council members and other members of the school community to complete this task. The module should be used in conjunction with the Wellbeing and Behaviour template and template guide.

    Module 2 (ppt 378 Kb)
    Teacher notes (pdf 162 Kb)

  3. Unpacking the Code of Behaviour
This module complements Modules 1 and 2. It encourages staff to look critically at the Code of Behaviour and to question and consider some of the statements contained there-in. The unit can be used prior to delivery of the other Professional Learning modules on the Safe Schools NT website and allows participants to become familiar with the content of the Code of Behaviour. The Code of Behaviour school's brochure should be used to generate discussion and highlight areas in schools' Wellbeing and Behaviour policies that may need to be explored further.

    Module 3 (ppt 262 Kb)
    Teacher notes (pdf 70 Kb)

  4. Developing a Classroom Management Plan: The Basics
This module was developed by Norman Alexander with support from Lisa Chappell. Both Norman and Lisa are Wellbeing Officers with vast experience in the areas of student behaviour and classroom management. The module outlines the basic steps that a classroom teacher may wish to take to effectively manage their classroom and their students' learning. The module can be used in conjunction with an extensive checklist that covers six domains of classroom management. Classroom Management Plan Framework checklist (pdf 86 Kb)

    Teacher notes (pdf 108 Kb)

  5. Individual Behaviour Plans: For those who stand out!
This module was developed by Chris Bradley working on the SIBIS (Stop It Before It Starts) project at Student Services. It aims to help teachers develop individual behaviour plans (soon to be known as Educational Adjustment Plans, AEPs) for students who exhibit behaviour that may not be covered in a teachers classroom management plan. AEPs should become a part of a teachers overall approach to managing their classroom and catering for all students.

    Module 5 (ppt 270 Kb)
    Teacher notes (pdf 95 Kb)

  6. Risk Management in the Context of Challenging Behaviour: A whole school approach to managing challenging behaviours
The module is based on Practically Speaking: Risk Management in the Context of Challenging Behaviour (pdf 859 Kb) by Jill Dean, (ASSE Journal, Special Education Perspectives Issue 1, September 2006), and should be presented with reference to this paper which has been reproduced with the kind permission of the author and the editor of the ASSE Journal. 7. Behavioural De-escalation: Strategies for responding to and managing aggressive behaviour
The aim of this module is to develop a better understanding of aggressive behaviour and to develop appropriate responses to the risk presented by aggressive behaviour in the course of our duties. The module is aimed at Principals and teaching staff in schools and is based on notes and slides presented to staff in the NT by Michael Tunnecliffe on behalf of ANTSEL in May 2007. They are reproduced here with kind permission of Micheal Tunnecliffe for use in NT schools.
