NT Certificate of Education

A Smart Territory The Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE) is awarded to students who successfully complete their senior secondary education. Students usually complete their NTCE over 2 years, but may take longer. Northern Territory students in Year 11 and Year 12 undertake the NTCE.

2009 results

The 2009 Northern Territory Certificate of Education results were released on Wednesday 16 December 2009. Students can access their individual results from the SACE Board of South Australia website.

A Results and Enquiries Service will offer a free-call telephone helpline on 1800 009 282. NTCE staff will take calls and assist students and parents to interpret results and offer career and tertiary advice. The service will operate from 8am until 4.30pm weekdays until noon 31 December.

NTCE review

The NTCE is currently being reviewed, and will result in changes to the way senior secondary education is structured in the Nothern Territory. The new NTCE has been phased in from 2009 with the Personal Learning Plan beginning undertaken by Year 10 students, to 2011. No student will be disadvantaged as a result of this change. The new NTCE will be designed to support the diverse needs to students across the Territory, and to recognise many different forms of learning that our young people are undertaking.

About the NTCE

NTCE students are required to undertake literacy and numeracy studies, as well as a selection of subjects from two subject groups to ensure breadth and depth in their studies.

The NTCE presents a set of requirements that relate to:

  • Literacy: subjects will provide the opportunity to understand, analyse, critically respond to, and create spoken, written, and visual communications, and use information and communication technologies, in different contexts
  • Numeracy: a student's NTCE will include some study of Mathematics
  • Breadth and depth: a student's NTCE will include studies from the arts/humanities/social and cultural studies group of subjects and from the mathematics/science/technology group of subjects at Stage 1 and Stage 2.

Definitions

A unit of study is equivalent to 50 to 60 hours of programmed school time. Students will need to complete 22 units of study. Some of these studies are determined by the SACE Board of South Australia and the student's school, and about a third (i.e. up to 9 units) are free choice units that allow students to customise the NTCE so that it opens their chosen pathway, which may be to further study, training, work, or a combination of these.

In choosing these units students can be guided by what they plan to do after they finish their NTCE and by the range of subjects offered by your school.

Standards

It is important that NTCE students complete their studies to required standards. A level of satisfactory achievement must be reached for at least 16 out of 22 units.

To gain satisfactory achievement in a unit students will have demonstrated evidence of achievement equivalent to a score of 10 or more out of 20. In Community Studies, students must present evidence of having completed all the tasks agreed to in their contract of work.

A recorded achievement in a unit means that students will have demonstrated evidence of achievement that is equivalent to a score of between 3 and 9 out of 20. In Community Studies, students must present evidence of having attempted some of the tasks agreed to in their contract of work.
