Higher education
The Department of Education and Training assists the Minister for Education and Training in ensuring that the NT higher education sector is of a high quality that is recognised nationally and internationally. The Minister is the approving authority for the provision of higher education in the NT. On behalf of the Minister, DET oversees quality and approval arrangements and provides advice on the operations of higher education institutions operating in the NT.
Higher Education Services works with stakeholders to:
- provide independent advice on all areas of higher education
- position the NT higher education sector to meet current and future needs
- manage accreditation of higher education courses and approval processes in the NT.
In Australia, higher education is the sector that offers university-level education, that is, at degree level and above. The Commonwealth and State and Territory governments share responsibility for the sector.
In the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), higher education courses are those leading to the award of associate degree, bachelor's degree, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, master's degree or doctoral degree. Some courses leading to the award of a diploma or advanced diploma may also be accredited as higher education courses.
Almost all higher education in Australia is offered by universities. A small but growing number of non-university providers and overseas institutions also offer accredited higher education courses.
