Year 10 curriculum

The Year 10 curriculum (pdf 337 kb) is intended to establish Year 10 as a foundation year for senior secondary. It is the product of aligning the learning outcomes of the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework (NTCF) with assessment requirements and achievement standards of the Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET).

Learning outcomes from the NTCF are restated as learning requirements for each subject. Knowledge, understandings and skills necessary for success at senior secondary provide the focus for learning and assessment tasks in mandated subjects.

Subject summaries

The following subjects are mandated for Year 10 students:

  • English or English as a Second Language (ESL)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Studies of Society and the Environment (SOSE) with 30 hours of History

Each subject is described in the form of a subject summary accompanied by a set of performance standards at the end.

Diversity of student needs is catered for by offering three courses in English and Mathematics and two in ESL and Science. Schools decide on the most appropriate course for their students.

Recommended pattern of study for Year 10

  • English, Mathematics and Science for 60 hours each semester
  • SOSE and Science for a minimum of 60 hours each
  • At least 30 hours of History within Year 10 SOSE
  • Stage 1 Personal Learning Plan (PLP) for 60 hours over the course of Year 10

Semester 1
English or ESL, Mathematics, Science, SOSE (including 30 hours of History), Stage 1 PLP and Free choice

Semester 2
English or ESL, Mathematics, Science / Free choice, SOSE / Free choice, Free choice and Free choice

Assessment

Year 10 core subjects have specific assessment requirements. Evidence of student learning in each course will be assessed against the performance standards provided with each subject summary. Five levels of achievement are reported as A to E grades and each level of achievement describes knowledge, understandings and skills that teachers will refer to in determining how well students have demonstrated their learning.

Learning and assessment plan

A generic Year 10 learning and assessment plan is provided at the end of the Year 10 curriculum document (pdf 337 kb). It is the same format as the approved NTCET Stage 1 Learning and Assessment Plan, thereby providing consistency for both students and teachers between years of study in senior secondary.

Teachers are recommended to use this template for organising assessment schedules and detailing assessment tasks.
