Professional learning

We recognise that professional learning is essential to achieving exemplary education and training outcomes for Territorians.

Our Professional Learning Policy defines professional learning (PL) as opportunities or experiences that promote enhanced skills, knowledge, attributes, attitudes and behaviours of staff to improve service delivery in order to meet present and future organisational objectives and individual career development.

Learning is a shared responsibility between the individual and the department. Everyone has an obligation to take charge of their own development and the department has an obligation to offer a cultural environment that is conducive to learning.

Assisting Paraprofessional Professional Learning in Literacy Support

The Assisting Paraprofessional Professional Learning in Literacy Support (APPLLS) resource was developed as a part of the National Action Plan for Literacy and Numeracy by the Strong Literacy and Numeracy in Communities Pilot. It aims to support professional learning to paraprofessional staff in urban and rural schools in particular but can be adapted to other school contexts. More

Talking NAMBA

This resource is the numeracy component of the Strong Literacy and Numeracy in Communities pilot. It was built on research and materials produced as a result of the Building Community Capacity Project. It is based on the idea that effective teaching, particularly in intercultural contexts, depends on teachers and paraprofessionals working closely together. The role of this resource is to help teaching teams (teachers working alongside paraprofessionals) to work together in order to help students of all cultural backgrounds to achieve a deep and effective understanding of mathematics. It does this by providing a focus on what students already understand, what they need to learn next and how this learning can be achieved. More
