Completing or Cancelling an Apprenticeship

Completion of the Training Agreement

The Registered Training Organisation (RTO) must confirm that the apprentice/trainee has received all the required on-and off-the-job training and successfully completed all units of competency to achieve the qualification. Once this has occurred the employer should contact Australian Apprenticeships NT to complete the apprenticeship.

Cancellation of the Training Agreement

If the apprentice or trainee is still within the stipulated probation period, the contract can be legally cancelled by either party, giving one week's notice.

After the probation period either party may request cancellation of the contract for reasons such as:

  • Theft, assault or fraud on behalf of the apprentice
  • Misconduct on behalf of the employer
  • The apprentice's absence from work without consent
  • Cessation of the business.

If you can reach a mutual and voluntary agreement to cancel the contract, both parties must complete and sign the required cancellation forms and forward them to Australian Apprenticeships NT.

Resolving a Complaint

If you are not able to reach mutual agreement, the NAC will investigate the complaint and attempt to resolve it. In some instances the complaint will be referred by Australian Apprenticeships NT to the Department of Education and Training for action.

It is important that discussion between the parties takes place prior to cancellation.

If you require any further information about apprenticeships please contact Australian Apprenticeships NT on 89 800 600.
